SMASHED is a melodrama about a young woman battling alcoholism while trying to hold down her job as a teacher. It is rated 15 for strong language, sex, sex references and hard drug use.

Strong language ('f**k') is used both as a term of abuse and as an explicit reference to the sexual act. It occurs within angry and drunken confrontations, occasionally representing the loss of control of characters under the influence of alcohol.

In one scene a female character rages at a shopkeeper who refuses to sell her alcohol after hours. She makes an explicit sexual remark in an attempt to humiliate him. In another scene, a male colleague confesses his love of a woman and goes on to reveal his fantasies in explicit detail. In admonishing her colleague, the woman indicates the inappropriateness of his comment while also repeating the language. In a scene of sex a woman sits astride her husband, vigorously attempting to engage with him. However, there is no nudity and the man passes out from drunkenness.

There is one scene showing two women smoking crack cocaine from a pipe. The supplier of the pipe talks about the drug in positive terms and there is a close shot of a woman inhaling deeply. However, the down side of the drug is soon shown as the woman awakens the next morning in the street with no knowledge as to her whereabouts or that of her car.

SMASHED does not portray alcohol abuse as anything other than damaging, and scenes of drunkenness are neither glamorous nor presented as funny.

No-one younger than 15 may see a 15 rated film in the cinema. No-one younger than 15 may rent or buy a 15 rated video or DVD.
