A SINGLE MAN is a drama in which a man deals with the grief of losing his long-time lover in a fatal car crash.

Suicide

The theme of suicide is central in this film, and features a man who, having been on the verge of committing suicide, ultimately makes the choice not to do so. In one scene, the man lies on his bed and puts the barrel of the gun in his mouth. However, his suicide attempt is subsequently interrupted by the telephone ringing.

Drugs

There is a discussion of the hallucinogen 'mescaline', in which a student, who has enthused about the experience, asks his teacher if he ever took drugs and which he confirms he did, but that it resulted in him behaving stupidly. Drug misuse is not condoned by the film as a whole.

Nudity

There are a couple of scenes of sexualised nudity; however, no sexual activity takes place.

There are also some scenes in which adults smoke cigarettes, and which reflect the time period in which the film is set.
