SILENCE is a historical drama, set in the seventeenth century, in which two Jesuit priests travel to Japan in search of their missing mentor.

Violence

There is a large blood spurt as a man is decapitated with a sword. The headless corpse is then dragged to a shallow grave, leaving behind a trail of blood on the ground. In other scenes condemned Christians are rolled up in tatami mats and burned to death or drowned in the sea. Others are tied to large crosses on a rocky seashore and left to die as heavy waves crash over them. Scenes of torture include boiling water being dripped onto victims and people being suspended upside down, their heads having been lowered into shallow pits.

Other issues include infrequent use of moderate bad language ('whore').
