SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER is a 1977 US drama about a young man who enters a disco contest. The film exists in two very different versions, one intended for adults and one intended for family audiences. The full version was originally classified X for cinema release in 1978 (meaning no admission to persons under 18), whereas the softer version was classified A for cinema release in 1979 (broadly equivalent to the modern PG rating). The uncut version was subsequently classified 18 for video release in 1990. This cinema re-release comprises the uncut version of the film and is rated 18 for very strong language.
The film contains around 70 uses of strong language ('f**k') and six uses of very strong language ('c**t'). Four of the uses of very strong language are aggressive or insulting and directed by men towards women. There is also some moderate bad language (including uses of 'prick', 'pussy', 'snatch' and 'bitch') and milder bad language (eg 'shit' and 'asshole'). The film also contains some use of discriminatory terms (eg 'n*gger', 'spick', 'faggot').
SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER includes strong and crude verbal sex references, strong sex scenes featuring thrusting, sexualised breast nudity during striptease routines, and soft and hard drug use. There are also some moments of violence, including sight of bloodied faces. In one scene a man attempts to force himself on a woman but she kicks him in the groin. In another scene a drunk and stoned woman appears to consent to sex with a group of men but then begins to sober up and protests. However, this scene of sexual violence is discreetly filmed.
No-one younger than 18 may see an 18 rated film in the cinema. No-one younger that 18 may rent or buy an 18 rated video or DVD.
