THE SALT OF THE EARTH is a documentary about the life and work of photographer Sebastião Salgado, whose career has spanned over four decades.

Disturbing images

Salgado's photographs include images of dead and emaciated men, women and children during a drought in Ethiopia, victims of the Rwandan genocide and other conflicts, and animals affected by the burning of oil fields in Kuwait following the First Gulf War. While disturbing, these images are well contextualised and show limited injury detail or sight of blood, with the majority being in black and white.

There is also a sequence in which native tribesmen shoot arrows into trees and are subsequently seen collecting dead sloths from branches.

There are occasional scenes of natural nudity.
