Note: The following text may contain spoilers

RIOT is an Australian drama based on the true story of LGBT activists who organised the world's first gay and lesbian Mardi Gras in 1978.

Violence

In a homophobic assault, a police officer beats a young man heavily and with bloody detail. It is implied that a teenager is raped by a man he accepts a lift with.

Suicide

A young man attempts to take his own life.

Language

There is strong language ('c**ksucker', 'f**k'), as well as milder terms such as 'bitch' and 'shit'. There is use of discriminatory terms such as 'poofter', 'fag' and 'shirt-lifter'. These are mostly self referential, but infrequently used with homophobic intent.

Sex

There are scenes of implied oral sex, and sex references to 'bestiality' and a 'threeway'.

Characters roll and smoke joints.
