RIO BREAKS is a subtitled documentary set in Rio de Janeiro. It concerns two young boys who turn to surfing as a means of escape from their dangerous lives in the favelas. The film was classified '12A' for one use of crude language and references to violence and drugs.

There are many references to violence and drugs as various interviewees, including the two boys, talk about the drug lords who control the favelas and about people who have died during police raids or gang shootings. Examples include "They'll shoot you and throw your body down a cliff...at the soccer field there's a place where they burn bodies" and "They threw him down the stairs" (after the police shot the drug-dealing brother of one of the boys). These references serve to illustrate the dangers of favela life, from which the boys are trying to escape. None of the interviewees condone or glamorise violence, drug trafficking or drug use. There is one use of crude language when one of the boys talks about having been rude to a policeman who has been teasing him about his hair. The policeman reacted in anger to his rudeness and the boy tells us, "He told me to take it up my ass". This isolated crude reference is permissible at '12A' where the BBFC's Guidelines state 'Frequent crude references are unlikely to be acceptable'.

The film also contains a scene in which one of the boys waves a kitchen knife, while his young niece warns him about the dangers of children playing with knives. There is also some mild language ('hell', 'dammit', 'screw', 'crappy', 'piss off', 'bullshit', 'ass').
