THE PROMISE is a historical drama in which an American journalist and an Armenian medical student get caught up in the genocide of the Armenian people by the Ottoman Empire.

Violence

There are some battle scenes during which gunshots inflict wounds but with little bloodshed. One sequence shows a street fight as a man is attacked and beaten up.

Disturbing images

Two medical students are shown carrying out an autopsy, removing organs from the cadaver and causing liquid to spurt out as incisions are made. Elsewhere there is sight of dead people lying on the ground or suspended from frames in the aftermath of attacks.

There are some passing references to opium misuse and some mild bad language, including 'shit' and 'bastard.'
