PAUL BLART - MALL COP is a comedy about a security guard in a shopping mall who has to deal with a gang attempting to rob all the stores in the mall. It has been rated 'PG' for the scenes of moderate comic violence and mild language.

The moderate comic violence is found in two scenes in particular when the hero is being chased by some of the villains. One of them gets trapped on a sunbed which the hero uses to knock the man out. No injury is seen and the whole tone is one of comic slapstick. A slightly more intense scene occurs in a glass lift when two of the villains smash their way in and try and drag the hero out but both fall harmlessly to the mall floor below. Shortly afterwards one of them falls through a skylight along with the hero but they land in a child's pool of plastic balls and are quite unharmed. The guidelines at 'PG' state that 'moderate violence, without detail, may be allowed if justified by it setting'. Here the setting is one of over the top slapstick comedy and this very much mitigates the tone and strength of the violence on view.

There is also some mild bad language in the film, such as 'ass', 'hell', 'shit' , 'screw' and 'god'. These are all allowed at 'PG' under the guidelines.

Precuts information

During post-production, the distributor sought and was given advice on how to secure the desired classification. Following this advice, certain changes were made prior to submission

This film was originally shown to the BBFC in an unfinished version. The BBFC advised the company that the film was likely to receive a '12A' classification but that the requested 'PG' certificate could be achieved by making changes to two scenes. In particular the BBFC suggested that a scene in which a man has the lid of a sun bed slammed onto him several times be reduced; and that an extended fight sequence also be reduced to remove some of the strongest blows. In this scene specifically, it was suggested that a blow to the face with a skateboard and dialogue which introduces and emphasises a headbutt be removed. When the finished version of the film was submitted these reductions had been made satisfactorily and the film was classified 'PG'.
