PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 is a supernatural horror film, and a prequel to both of the previous films in the series. The story now focusses on the sisters when they were young girls. As before, strange events and disturbances in a house are recorded on video cameras. The film was classified '15' for strong language and threat.

The BBFC's Guidelines at '12A'/'12' state 'The use of strong language (for example, 'fuck') must be infrequent'. This film contains over ten uses of strong language and is therefore more appropriately placed at '15' where the Guidelines state 'There may be frequent use of strong language'.

The Guidelines at '12A'/'12' also state 'Moderate physical and psychological threat may be permitted, provided disturbing sequences are not frequent or sustained'. However, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 features frequent strong threat and menace from the opening minutes. The cameras record disturbing off-screen sounds and implied violence, which increase in number and intensity as the film proceeds. Later in the film, there is sight of violence inflicted on characters by the paranormal force. The impact of these scenes is intensified by the use of hand-held and CCTV footage, as the family are terrorised by unseen forces within a credible and realistic domestic setting. These scenes are therefore more appropriately classified at '15' where 'Strong threat and menace are permitted unless sadistic or sexualised'.

The film also contains some moderate sex references. In one scene the parents of the girls attempt to make a home made sex tape with a video camera, but they become embarrassed and no actual sexual activity takes place beyond kissing. No nudity is shown. The film also contains a brief scene of pot smoking, as a character lights up a joint. However, the scene is comic in nature because the person in question is embarrassed and doesn't want to be filmed because the drug is illegal. There is no glamorising of the drug taking in this brief scene.
