THE MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN is a horror feature about a photographer who hunts a serial killer committing brutal slayings on the New York subway. The film was classified '18' for strong bloody violence, gore and horror.
The strong bloody violence accumulates over the length of the film as the killer uses a variety of weapons to bludgeon and dismember his victims. The murders are accompanied by a sense of intense terrorisation adding to the horror of the killings, along with the very gory injuries that result from his actions. Although strong violence is allowed at '15', the cumulative focus on the infliction of pain and injury and the strength of detail in the gory images was considered to be unacceptable below the adult category. The lack of a significantly personalised, sadistic or sexualised edge to the violence allowed the strength of detail - which is comparable to that in works from the horror genre also passed at '18' - to be accommodated at the adult category.
The work also contains strong language and one strong sex scene.
