THIS MEANS WAR is an action comedy romance. Two young CIA agents fall for the same woman. Each then uses the considerable resources of the Agency to scupper the chances of his rival in love. The film was originally classified '12A' for cinema release for moderate violence and sex references and one use of strong language. However, this extended version of the film has been classified '15' for strong language and crude sex references
The BBFC's Guidelines at '12A'/'12' state 'Frequent crude [sex] references are unlikely to be acceptable'. This extended version of the film contains a sequence that was not present in the cinema version, which includes a rapid succession of crude visual and verbal sex references, relating to a variety of sexual acts and practices. This scene is more appropriately classified at '15' where the Guidelines state 'There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour'. Unlike the cinema version, which contained only one use of strong language, this extended version of the film includes three uses of strong language, two of which occur in rapid succession during the sequence described above. They are used in a crude sexual sense.
The film also contains a number of comic verbal sex references, including a woman remarking on the size of a man's penis: "Every time it lands in my urethra it's like a Blitzkrieg". A little later, when she refers to the size of a man's hands, she states: "That means he's got a microlight for a penis". The film also includes scenes of action violence, including some blows that are enhanced by crunchy sounds effects. However, there is no clear injury detail, other than occasional sight of blood on a man's head, and the scenes are mitigated by the comedy context. The film also contains a single comic use of the term 'spaz' but the film as a whole does not endorse discriminatory language or behaviour.
