MACGRUBER is a comedy action film about a secret agent who uses his dubious skill to outwit criminals, with typically disastrous results. He finds himself up against his arch enemy who threatens peace with a nuclear bomb. The film was classified '15' for strong language, sex and comic bloody violence.

The BBFC's Guidelines at '15' state that 'There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, 'fuck'). The strongest terms (for example, 'cunt') may be acceptable if justified by the context'. In MACGRUBER there are over thirty uses of strong language, together with frequent comic word play on very strong language - the villain's name is Dieter Von Cunth.

At '15' the Guidelines state that 'Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable'. During MACGRUBER the comic bloody violence includes sight of blood spraying in gun battles and when villains have their throats ripped out by the hero - his trademark move. Such injuries are shown only briefly but the effect is strong with blood and tissue damage clearly visible. One scene features clear bloody detail as a pair of pliers are used to dig out a bullet in a character's leg. A fight later in the film includes sight of a character being riddled with bullets as he falls off a cliff, before being reduced to a charred corpse after a grenade is thrown at his dead body. The violence and bloody detail in these scenes is all played for comedic effect.

The Guidelines at '15' state that 'Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour, but the strongest references are unlikely to be acceptable unless justified by context'. A sex scene in MACGRUBER features a character repeatedly grunting as he has sex with a woman, with dialogue such as "I'm gonna fill you up" heard. We see the character thrusting into her throughout the scene but the bedsheets cover any sight of nudity. Later there is sight of a character thrusting into a woman during sex, with his buttocks visible. Again, any strong detail is hidden from view. There are also strong verbal sex references related to a range of sexual activities including oral sex. As with the violence such references are played for comedy throughout.
