LOOPER is a sci-fi action thriller set in the future about a hit man who finds out that his next hit is himself. He must team up with his future self to change the course of history. The film was classified '15' for strong language and bloody violence.
The film contains over 20 uses of strong language. This exceeds the terms of the BBFC's Guidelines at '12A'/12', which state 'The use of strong language (for example, 'fuck') must be infrequent', but is permissible at '15' where the Guidelines state 'There may be frequent use of strong language'. There are several scenes of strong bloody violence that go beyond the 'moderate violence' and 'occasional gory moments' that are permissible at '12A'. There is occasional sight of blood splashes when victims are shot and one scene in particular shows a man being repeatedly shot in slow motion from many angles. This results in blood and gore flying through the air. The violence occurs within a fantastical sci-fi context without any lingering on the suffering of the victims. At '15' the Guidelines state 'Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable'.
The film also contains implied use of an imaginary drug, which is applied in the form of eye-drops, and two very brief images of a syringe suggesting that the man's drug use has escalated in the future. There is no instructive detail of drug use and drug use is not glamorised. There are some moderate sex references, partial female nudity and scenes showing adults smoking cigarettes.
