LES PETITS MOUCHOIRS - LITTLE WHITE LIES is a subtitled French drama about a group of friends who are forced to face uncomfortable truths about one another on their annual holiday together. The film was classified '15' for strong language and sex references.

The quantity of strong language in the film exceeds the terms of the BBFC's Guidelines at '12A'/'12' which state 'The use of strong language (for example, 'fuck') must be infrequent' and is more appropriately placed at '15' where the Guidelines permit 'frequent use of strong language'.

The film deals with themes concerning adult relationships, which inevitably takes in the sex lives of the various characters. The Guidelines at '15' state 'Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour, but the strongest references are unlikely to be acceptable unless justified by context'. One scene shows a woman, who feels sexually ignored by her husband, watching internet porn on a laptop. It is implied that she is using this for sexual stimulation. There is a brief shot of the laptop screen, on which we can see unrealistic-looking animated figures performing sexual acts. Although the images in question show what might be regarded as 'strong detail', the brevity of the images and their crude animated nature significantly mitigate their strength. The Guidelines state that the classification criteria 'will not be applied in an over-literal way if such an interpretation would lead to an outcome which would confound audience expectations' and it was concluded that an over-literal interpretation of these brief cartoon images as 'strong detail' would lead to an unfairly restrictive classification of the film. Further strong verbal sex references include a passing reference to 'double penetration', a man jovially describing two women he believes to have shared a lesbian relationship as 'rug munchers', and a woman joking about taking part in a 'gangbang'.

The film also contains occasional sight of soft drug use which carries no overt endorsement, scenes of smoking, and a single instance of mild violence when a man delivers a punch to another character.
