Note: The following text may contain spoilers

LARS AND THE REAL GIRL is a drama about an emotionally disturbed young man who develops a relationship with a life-sized doll.

Theme

Lars’ unstable mental health and emotional trauma are sensitively handled, with the character accepted and supported by his community, rather than ostracized or ridiculed.

Sex

The doll that Lars pretends is his girlfriend is technically a 'sex toy', but it is clear that Lars never sleeps with it. There are some un-detailed visual and verbal references to sex toy websites and verbal references to the doll being ‘anatomically correct’. The local townspeople gossip about whether Lars has sex with the doll.
