IRON SKY is a comedy science-fiction film in which American astronauts discover a Nazi city on the moon. This leads to conflict between the moon-dwellers and the people on Earth. It was classified '15' for strong language and occasional strong violence.
The film includes over 20 uses of strong language. This exceeds the level of 'infrequent' strong language that may be permitted at '12A' but is allowable at '15' where the BBFC's Guidelines state 'There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, 'fuck')'. There are occasional scenes of strong violence, including a moment in which an astronaut is shot in the head, resulting in a blood spray, and a scene in which a woman buries the heel of her shoe in a man's forehead, causing him to stagger about and die. The emphasis on injuries and blood exceeds the terms of the Guidelines at '12A'/'12' but there is no dwelling on the infliction of pain or injury, meaning they are permissible at '15'.
The 'Nazi' theme is dealt with in a comic and exaggerated fashion, with the Nazis generally presented as pompous fools who ultimately meet bad ends. The intention of the film is clearly to ridicule Nazi beliefs. IRON SKY also includes some moderate comic sex references. These include verbal references to oral sex and a scene in which two soldiers look at and comment upon an undetailed pin-up magazine. There is some discriminatory language, including the US President saying "I'm just like Franklin D. Roosevelt, only you know I'm not a spastic". However, this language is not endorsed by the film as a whole and is spoken by unsympathetic characters. There is some moderate and mild bad language (for example, 'prick', 'ass', 'shit', 'crap') and some innocuous drug references, when a man identifies marijuana plants by sniffing the leaves and when a man remarks "You must be tripping".
