THE IRON LADY is a drama about the life of Margaret Thatcher, revisiting in flashback some key events in her political life, including her rise to power, the Falklands War, and the poll tax riots. The film was classified '12' for real images of moderate violence, injury detail and brief nudity.

The film includes news footage from the 1984 Brighton hotel bombing, in which we briefly see a person with bloody injuries on a stretcher. Other news footage shows rioting in the streets with policemen hitting protesters with truncheons, as well as sight of a man face down on the ground with some blood around his head and an apparently injured or dead horse on the ground. The BBFC's Guidelines at '12A'/'12' state 'Moderate violence is allowed but should not dwell on detail. There should be no emphasis on injuries or blood, but occasional gory moments may be permitted if justified by the context'. There is also news footage of two topless women celebrating in public after the Falklands War. The Guidelines at '12A'/'12' state 'Nudity is allowed, but in a sexual context must be brief and discreet'.

The film also contains some mild bad language ('bugger', 'bloody', 'bastards'). There are a few brief scenes of smoking, reflecting the period in which the film is set, but the film as a whole neither glamorises nor promotes smoking and is not aimed at children.
