THE INBETWEENERS MOVIE is a comedy about four young men who have finished their A Levels and decide to go on holiday to Malia in Crete. The film is based on the TV series of the same name, and was originally classified '15' for cinema release in version cut in line with the BBFC's advice. However, this DVD version reinstates the material cut for cinema release and has therefore been classified '18' for very strong language, strong sex references and nudity.
Two scenes featuring strong visual sex references and strong nudity were reduced for the '15' classified cinema release. These were: a scene in which a man in a club appears to be masturbating a woman (which was reframed so that clear sight of masturbating was offscreen), and a scene in which a man in a club appears to fellate himself (which was reframed and cut to remove clear and repeated sight of the man's anus, and cut to remove clear sight of the man's head bobbing as he fellates himself). In addition, a scene was cut to remove a strong verbal reference in which a man jokes about urination during sex. The reinstatement of the full version of these three scenes in this version of the film exceeds the terms of the BBFC's Guidelines at '15' which state 'Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour, but the strongest references are unlikely to be acceptable unless justified by context'. The film also includes several other strong sex references that were permitted in the '15' classified cinema version. These include verbal and visual jokes about 'fingering' women, remarks about 'vag', 'minge' and 'clunge', crude hand gestures, and implied masturbation with ham slices as one character watches a pornography website. Although many of the verbal and visual jokes in the film are crude, they occur within a comic context and are likely to be familiar to fans of the TV series.
The film contains three uses of very strong language, one of which is aggressively directed and accompanied by physical threat. The Guidelines at '15' state 'The strongest terms (for example, 'cunt') may be acceptable if justified by the context. Aggressive or repeated use of the strongest language is unlikely to be acceptable'. The aggressive and threatening use of very strong language exceeds the terms of the '15' Guidelines and was redubbed with 'shit' in the cinema version. However, its reinstatement here means the film is more appropriately classified at '18'. The other two uses of very strong language are not personally directed.
The film also includes frequent strong language and some brief and undetailed snorting of cocaine by a clearly negative character.
Precuts information
During post-production, the distributor sought and was given advice on how to secure the desired classification. Following this advice, certain changes were made prior to submission

THE INBETWEENERS MOVIE was originally seen by the BBFC in an unfinished version. The company was informed that the film was likely to receive an '18' classification but the preferred '15' classification could be achieved by making cuts in four scenes. These were to remove an aggressive use of very strong language, to remove a particularly crude verbal sex reference (to urolagnia), and to reduce the explicitness of two scenes of sexual activity (one of self-fellatio and one of masturbation). When the completed version of the film was submitted, the aggressive use of very strong language had been redubbed, the crude verbal sex reference had been removed, and the strong scenes of sexual activity had been reduced, by a mixture of cutting and reframing. The film was therefore classified '15' without further cuts.
