IL VANGELO SECONDO MATTEO - THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ST. MATTHEW is a subtitled Italian film of St. Matthew's account of Christ's life. It was originally rated U for cinema release in 1964, and U for video release in both 1991 and 1999. This cinema re-release is rated PG for moderate violence, hanging and a crucifixion scene.
Violence includes a scene where soldiers arrive in a village and kill babies. The infants are stabbed and one is thrown in the air. There is also sight of a dead boy lying on the ground in bloodstained clothes. The scene is discreetly filmed, with little detail.
There is also a hanging scene in which Judas, overwhelmed by the consequences of his betrayal of Christ, prepares to hang himself. He ties material around his neck and a tree, and his body is subsequently seen hanging from the noose. The scene does not contain any detail of his body dropping.
During the crucifixion men have nails driven into their hands, following which they are seen hanging from large wooden crosses. There is little violent detail shown in this recreation of a well-known event.
PG stands for Parental Guidance. A PG film should not disturb a child aged around eight or older. However, parents are advised to consider whether the content may upset younger or more sensitive children.
