THE IDES OF MARCH is a political drama about a Presidential campaign and the political machinations of the candidate's campaign staff. The film was classified '15' for strong language.
The film contains frequent use of strong language, although the majority of uses are non-aggressive and non-directed. However, some uses are more sexual in nature, being spoken to describe and condemn the sexual transgressions of one of the principal characters. This exceeds the terms of the BBFC's Guidelines at '12A'/'12' which state 'The use of strong language (for example, 'fuck' must be infrequent' but is permissible at '15' where the Guidelines state 'There may be frequent use of strong language' and 'There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour'.
The film also contains a sub-plot focusing on a character who seeks, and secures, an abortion. The film does not take any position on this issue but presents the young woman in question as someone whose youthful inexperience has allowed her to be taken advantage of by a person of power and influence. The Guidelines at '15' state 'No theme is prohibited, provided the treatment is appropriate for 15 year olds'.
