ICE AGE 4 - CONTINENTAL DRIFT is an animated adventure sequel which follows the prehistoric mammals from earlier films as they are hit by a continental drift and travel across the seas, have adventures, face pirates and try to reunite with their families. It is rated U for mild threat and comic violence.
The film contains several scenes of mild threat as the characters endure earthquakes, stormy seas and the challenge of a gang of pirates led by Captain Gutt, a rogue ape character. In one scene, Sid the Sloth and the others hurtle on an iceberg towards a hurricane and Sid suddenly sees a giant crab creature. He shouts 'Holy Crab!' in comic terror, as the threat quickly subsides. Later, during a climactic fight between Manny and Captain Gutt, both characters are hurtling towards the edge of a cliff but Manny manages to land safely inside the giant mouth of a friendly whale. Captain Gutt also threatens other characters and is seen whipping his gang into shape, as well as threatening a female sabre-toothed tiger character verbally. The film also contains some moments of comic violence. Some of the pirate animal characters wield sharp weapons made out of bone and shell-like material. In one scene, a rodent character holds up his sharp knife-like weapon excitedly, but is knocked back by the female sabre-toothed tiger and put in his place. The BBFC's Guidelines on violence, threat and imitable behaviour at U state there may be 'Mild violence only. Occasional mild threat or menace only' and there should be 'No potentially dangerous behaviour which young children are likely to copy. No emphasis on realistic or easily accessible weapons'. The violence is mild and comic and the threat is interspersed with comedy, adventure and positive messages aimed at children about self-empowerment and family. The weapons seen in the film are clearly not realistic or easily accessible and the work is an animated fantasy adventure depicting activity by animal characters that children are unlikely to copy.
The film also contains infrequent use of very mild bad language (eg 'butt').
U stands for Universal, which means that we think the film is suitable for audiences aged four or older.
