I CAN ONLY IMAGINE is a US drama about the life of Christian singer-songwriter Bart Millard, and the creation of the MercyMe song 'I Can Only Imagine'.

Violence

In one scene a man smashes a piece of crockery across his son's head in anger, and in a subsequent scene a small amount of blood is glimpsed on the son's temple. In another sequence a child tries to hit his father but the older man throws his son to the floor and threatens to punch him.

Theme

Verbal references are made to domestic abuse, such as a young man recalling his father beating him, muffled off-screen cries implying the boy's mother is being beaten, and the father appearing at the boy's bedroom door holding a belt. The narrative establishes the destructive impact of the father's abusive actions, but follows a path of redemption and reconciliation.

There are scenes of emotional distress in which a man succumbs to cancer, but these moments are dealt with in a sensitive manner.
