HUNKY DORY is a drama based on events that took place in a Swansea secondary school during the summer of 1976. It follows the story of a drama teacher who inspires her students by helping them stage a rock 'n' roll version of Shakespeare's 'The Tempest'. The film was classified '15' for strong language.

The film contains multiple uses of strong language. These exceed the terms of the BBFC's Guidelines at '12A'/'12', which state 'The use of strong language (for example, 'fuck') must be infrequent', but are permissible at '15' where the Guidelines state 'There may be frequent use of strong language'.

The film also contains some moderate sex references, including references to 'shagging' and to a female student being 'the school bike'. One student calls his stage partner 'a prick tease'. Additionally, there are some uses of discriminatory and racist language, mostly uttered by an unsympathetic skinhead character who refers to another student as being a 'puff' and who jokes about 'killing Pakis'. However, his attitudes are not endorsed by the work as a whole. There are brief glimpses of students smoking what appears to be marijuana, but this is not glamourised. Cigarette smoking also features occasionally, and various opinions are expressed about whether or not this is a good thing, but these simply reflect the attitudes of the day.
