HOT TUB TIME MACHINE is a comedy about three men who are transported back to 1986. They are given an opportunity to relive their wild pasts and to change what will be their disappointing futures. It has been classified '15' for strong language, crude sex references and drug use.
Numerous uses of strong language go beyond the BBFC Guidelines at '12A/12', which state that 'The use of strong language (for example, 'fuck') must be infrequent', but are permissible at '15' where the Guidelines allow for 'frequent use of strong language'.
Crude sex references occur throughout the film, in both verbal and visual form, in the context of characters reliving their wild young days. This includes scenes featuring female nudity and brief sexual activity as well as a sequence in which a male character pretends to have semen on his face in order to fool his friend into thinking he has performed oral sex on him. The sex references are strong but firmly embedded in the film's raucous comic style and do not go beyond what is permitted by the Guidelines at '15' which state that 'Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour, but the strongest references are unlikely to be acceptable unless justified by context'.
The film also features scenes of drug use, including smoking hash, eating hallucinogenic mushrooms and the implied snorting of cocaine. The adult characters who indulge in drugs do so in a rather pathetic manner because they are depressed and unable to cope, rather than appearing as glamorous figures. As a counterbalance to their activities, a teenage character who accompanies them is constantly upbraiding his elders for their drug use and warning of its dangers. Therefore, the overall presentation of the issue meets with the requirements of the Guidelines at '15' which state that 'Drug taking may be shown but the film as a whole must not promote or encourage drug use'.
The film also contains examples of moderate language, as well as scenes of moderate comic violence and gore.
