HOPE SPRINGS is a drama about a couple who decide to attend sessions with a relationship counsellor in an attempt to rediscover the romance and excitement of their marriage. It was rated 12A for frequent moderate sex references.
The sex references occur in the context of therapy sessions in which the couple are asked about their sexual history. The questions posed by the therapist are very matter-of-fact and the couple's responses are often comic because they have different attitudes towards the need for therapy. There are verbal references to sexual positions, sexual acts and fantasies and masturbation. However, the specific therapy context within which they occur means they do not register as particularly crude. There are scenes in which the couple put into practice some 'exercises in physical contact' that their therapist has suggested. For example, in one scene the wife attempts to perform a sexual act on her husband in a cinema. However, no strong detail is shown and her efforts get no further than some awkward fumbling and an embarrassed admission of failure. There is also a scene in which it is discreetly implied that the couple are masturbating separately, suggesting that the therapy is not working.
The film also contains some moderate and mild bad language, including uses of 'God', 'Jesus', 'pissed', 'screw you', 'son of a bitch' and one use of 'prick'.
No-one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult. No-one younger than 12 may rent or buy a 12 rated video or DVD.
