HALL PASS is a comedy directed by Farrelly brothers. Owen Wilson stars as a married man who, along with his friends, is given a 'Hall Pass' - a week off his marital duties - in order to do exactly what he wants. The film was classified '15' for strong language, sex references and crude humour.
The film contains around ten uses of strong language, some of which are sexual in nature. The BBFC's Guidelines at '15' state 'There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, 'fuck')'. At '15' the Guidelines also state 'Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour, but the strongest references are unlikely to be acceptable unless justified by context. Works whose primary purpose is sexual arousal or stimulation are unlikely to be acceptable'. During HALL PASS there are various strong references to oral sex, anal sex, and masturbation. Although sometimes crude, the emphasis is on the comedy of the situations in which the characters find themselves, rather than any eroticising of the sexual activities. Examples of the film's crude humour include a sequence in which a character is shocked by the large size of another man's penis, with clear sight of the man's genitalia. Another scene features a drunken woman who sneezes so hard that she accidentally defecates onto the bathroom wall behind her.
HALL PASS also includes a scene of soft drug use, in which the men eat some brownies which are laced with marijuana. As a result, they are unable to function properly. This sequence is played for comic effect and the drug use is not glamorised. The film also contains some brief sexualised nudity as a woman undoes her dress and bares her breasts to a man. There is also some milder bad language.
