Note: The following text may contain spoilers

HAIRSPRAY is a musical remake of John Waters' 1988 comedy about overcoming racism and other forms of prejudice in 1960s Baltimore. The film was classified 'PG' for mild language and sex references.

The film contains one comic use of 'whore' and one use of 'screwed' in the lyrics of a song. In both cases, the uses are not dwelt upon and were considered acceptable at 'PG' where 'mild bad language' is permitted. The film also contains a number of mild sex references and innuendo, which are sufficiently oblique so as to allow for an innocent interpretation. At 'PG' the BBFC's Guidelines state that 'mild sex references and innuendo' are permitted.

Although racist attitudes are portrayed, they are ridiculed and condemned.
