THE GREAT GATSBY

THE GREAT GATSBY is a 1974 adaptation of the F Scott Fitzgerald novel set in the 1920s. It tells the story of enigmatic millionaire Jay Gatsby and his neighbour, Nick Carraway, who is drawn to Gatsby's extravagant lifestyle and sees at first hand the emotional turmoil behind Gatsby's seemingly perfect image. It was originally classified A for cinema release in 1974 (broadly the same as the modern PG certificate) and then PG for video release in 1988 (prior to the introduction of the 12 classification). A subsequent DVD version was rated 12 in 2003 and this cinema re-release is rated 12A for moderate violence.

The strongest violence occurs when a person is shot several times, with splashes of blood marking the impacts. However, the scene is very brief. There is also a scene in which a woman gets a nosebleed after her boyfriend punches her in the face during an argument. This moment of domestic violence has some emotional impact but the man's actions are not condoned and he is shown to be a nasty character. There is also sight of blood when a woman accidentally bangs so hard on a window that her hand goes through the glass. However, she is not seriously injured.

When a woman is killed in a car accident there are some slightly gory verbal descriptions of her injuries, although these are not shown.

There are several references to adultery, but without any sexual detail, and several scenes in which glamorous people smoke cigarettes. As this is set in the 1920s, this comprises authentic period detail.

The film also features some mild bad language, including 'goddamn', 'son of a bitch', 'oh my God', 'Christ', 'shit'.

No-one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult. No-one younger than 12 may rent or buy a 12 rated video or DVD.
