GRAVE ENCOUNTERS is a horror film about a television crew who visit haunted locations. The film follows what happens to them when they go in search of a ghost in an abandoned psychiatric hospital. It was classified '15' for strong language, psychological threat and bloody horror.

There are several uses of strong language. These exceed the 'infrequent' strong language that is allowed by the BBFC's Guidelines at '12A'/'12'. However, they are permissible at '15' where the Guidelines state 'There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, 'fuck')'.

There is a pervasive sense of physical and psychological threat throughout the film. The crew use handheld and night vision cameras to film the corridors and rooms of the hospital and there is a constant sense that they may be attacked. This exceeds the type of 'Moderate physical and psychological threat' that can be allowed at '12A'/'12' as the disturbing sequences are both frequent and sustained. However, the threat and menace is neither sadistic nor sexualised, and so is permissible at '15'. Some strong bloody horror also occurs during the final section of the film. This includes sight of a severed tongue on the floor, a woman coughing up blood, a man eating a dead rat and photos of patients whose ribs and brains have been exposed by surgery and/or experimentation. Some of these moments dwell on detail or emphasise injuries and blood and are therefore not permissible at '12A'/'12'. However, they do not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury, or feature the strongest gory images, so the scenes are allowable at '15'.
