GEARS OF WAR 3 is a 'third person shooter' for the Microsoft Xbox 360 console. Set in the future, the player assumes the role of one of several elite COG (Coalition of Ordered Government) Delta Squad soldiers, including Marcus Fenix, a hard-bitten sergeant. Fenix and his colleagues are on the island of Vectes where they are living on the Raven's Nest, a converted aircraft carrier. The war against the Locust Horde rages on but a new enemy of genetic mutants, the Lambents, have evolved, representing a threat to both humanity and the Locusts. Fenix and his colleagues must battle their way through several levels / missions destroying mainly reptilian opponents and the occasional tentacled or fly-like 'boss monster'. The game was classified '18' for strong bloody violence.
The BBFC Guidelines at '15' state 'Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory moments are unlikely to be acceptable. Strong sadistic or sexualised violence is also unlikely to be acceptable'. The violence and associated gore occurs throughout the game and exceeds the terms of the '15' Guidelines. There is a clear dwelling on the infliction of bloody injury and the 'execution' moves include an element of sadism. The new opponents, the Lambents, ooze yellow goo when shot and tend to explode when killed, making it impossible to inflict post-mortem damage. The Locusts, however, bleed copiously and shooting them with the variety of weapons on offer produces large blood spurts and they can be decapitated and blown into chunks. The player also has the option of cutting them in two or impaling them on the chain-saw attachment to the standard issue 'Lancer' assault rifle. In such cases, blood appears to splatter onto the screen. A new feature in the game is the ability to summarily execute wounded opponents. These 'execution' moves, initiated by pressing a button on the controller when prompted to do so, include stomping on an opponent's head, reducing it to a bloody mess; disemboweling the opponent with the chainsaw attachment to the 'Lancer'; repeatedly punching the opponent in the face until it explodes; and kicking the heads off. These deaths are also accompanied by spurts of blood onto the screen. Otherwise, shooting fallen opponents results in blood spurts and some 'ragdolling' but minimal post-mortem injury.
GEARS OF WAR 3 also includes frequent strong language and some very mild sexual innuendo.
