FRIDAY THE 13TH is a horror drama which features a serial killer who murders people camping in the remote forest area where he lives.

It was passed '18' uncut for strong bloody violence and strong sex. The cumulative moments of strong violence also commend the category.

Incidents of bloody violence were judged too detailed, graphic and sadistic for '15' where guidelines say that violence may be strong but may not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury and that the strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. In one scene, a woman tied up in a sleeping bag is hung upside down over a campfire so that her head starts burning before the rest of her catches fire. While she screams and burns in the background, a man in the foreground is screaming because his foot is caught in a large iron trap with clawed jaws which dig deep into the increasingly bloody wound before the killer plunges a machete into the man's head. In another scene, the killer uses a screwdriver to stab the throat of a man. The camera stays on this as blood pours from the wound and bubbles from the man's eyes and mouth while he chokes horribly.

There are other strong violence scenes which may not be as bloody or as sustained but cumulatively, are better placed at '18': the killer buries his machete into a man's head; a man is slashed with a machete and blood gushes out of the throat wound; an arrow shoots though a man's forehead and exits through the back of his head; and another man is stabbed through the back of his head with a poker so that the poker exits through the man's bloody eye.

A sustained scene featuring strong sex and nudity is more appropriate at '18' where '15' guidelines say that sexual activity may be portrayed but without strong detail. It shows a naked woman, her breasts exposed - with intermittent sight of her pubic area - riding vigorously a naked man on his back.

There are several scenes of sustained strong threat and menace, often involving the various victims being chased by the killer before they are attacked. Strong language is frequent. A sequence of sexualised nudity features a woman's breasts exposed throughout the lengthy scene when she water-skies. Moderately strong sex references include lines such as, "Have sex with your boyfriend. / I am not going out there with a boner." Drug references include the sight of marijuana plants and a man smoking a bong.
