DEPARTURES is a Japanese comedy drama and about a man who prepares bodies to be placed into their coffins. It was passed '12A' for several emotionally intense scenes of bereavement.

There are several bereavement and funeral scenes in DEPARTURES. They have varying detail but involve sight of corpses dressed and placed in their coffins, sight of grieving families and some emotionally intense moments such as a son asking to watch his mother's coffin burn in a crematorium oven, a Father wishing he had accepted his son's transsexual dressing, families blaming themselves for suicides, sight of a small child's body in a coffin. Though the treatment is subtle there was a strong likelihood of distress for younger children viewing the work if it were passed 'PG'. The mature themes were better placed at '12A' where 'mature themes are acceptable, but their treatment must be suitable for young teenagers'.

In addition DEPARTURES contains infrequent mild language ('bastard'), some natural nudity (naked bathers in a bath house), mild sex references (including a man urgently kissing his wife when distressed and references to characters' sexuality) and verbal references to suicide.
