DEFIANT LIVES is a documentary about the protest movements led by disabled people to fight for civil rights and freedom from abuse.

Theme

Verbal and occasional visual references are made to the abuse and neglectful conditions to which disabled people have been subjected. These include being denied pain medication, tied to beds, imprisoned in institutions, burnt with cigarettes and raped. References are not detailed, and the film clearly condemns these actions.

Injury detail

A woman is accidentally struck during a protest, with subsequent sight of a gash on her forehead and blood on her face.

Language

In archive footage and images, disabled people are occasionally referred to as 'spastics' and 'mentally retarded'. The film does not condone these terms.

There are infrequent mild sex references, including a woman saying she was unaware what 'protection' was before becoming pregnant.
