THE DEER HUNTER is a war drama, from 1978, which focuses on the tragic effects of the Vietnam War on three men from a steel town in Pennsylvania.

Violence

There are intense scenes of battle violence which feature explosions and shoot-outs, resulting in bloody injury detail. One scene shows a man shooting down a woman and her child. There are blood spurts when men shoot themselves in the head during games of Russian Roulette.

Threat

There is strong sadistic threat in scenes which show soldiers being forced to play games of Russian Roulette. The scenes show the soldiers being menaced and psychologically tortured.

Theme

Portrayals of wartime trauma include scenes which show the mental disintegration of soldiers. This includes a scene which shows needle track marks in a soldiers arm, implying that he has become a drug abuser.

There is use of strong language ('f**k'), as well as milder terms including 'asshole', 'bastard', 'hell', 'shit', 'God', 'bitch', 'Jesus', 'Christ', 'pussy', 'son-of-a-bitch' and 'piss'. There are also several uses of discriminatory language ('faggot').

Sex references includes a reference to "Sucking another guys cock". Another scene shows women in small bikinis dancing in a club.

A scene shows a deer being shot down, but no strong detail is shown.

There is full frontal male nudity.
