THE DEEP BLUE SEA is an adaptation of a Terence Rattigan play, set in the immediate post-war years, in which a young woman leaves her High Court judge husband and embarks on a self-destructive affair with a young ex-RAF pilot.

Language

There is infrequent use of strong language ('f**k'), as well as milder terms such as 'bloody' and 'ass'.

Suicide

There is also a theme of suicide running throughout the film. The opening scene shows the woman preparing to take her own life by turning on a gas tap (a method that is no longer possible since the introduction of safety gas). Although the woman is saved there are many subsequent references to her attempt, including her lover taunting her by throwing money at her 'for the gas meter'.
