THE DEEP BLUE SEA is an adaptation of a Terence Rattigan play, set in the immediate post-war years, about a young woman who leaves her High Court judge husband and embarks on a self-destructive affair with a young ex-RAF pilot. The film was classified '12A' for one use of strong language and a theme of suicide.
The single use of strong language occurs when the principal characters are having an argument and the man uses strong language to describe his own life. The BBFC's Guidelines at '12A'/'12' state 'The use of strong language (for example, 'fuck') must be infrequent'.
There is also a theme of suicide running throughout the film. The opening scene shows the woman preparing to commit suicide by turning on a gas tap (a method that is no longer possible since the introduction of safety gas). Although the woman is saved there are many subsequent references to her attempt, including her lover taunting her by throwing money at her 'for the gas meter'. The Guidelines at '12A'/'12' state 'Mature themes are acceptable, but their treatment must be suitable for young teenagers' and that 'Dangerous behaviour (for example, suicide) should not dwell on detail which could be copied or appear pain or harm free'. The method attempted is not one that would be successful today and there is therefore no imitable detail. Furthermore, the suicide attempt is not portrayed as harm free and is very specific to the woman's personal circumstances rather than something that is likely to encourage such behaviour generally.
