DEATH AT A FUNERAL is a slapstick comedy. A family gathers for a funeral where almost anything that can go wrong does. The film was passed ‘15’ for strong language, sex references and comic drug use.

The BBFC Guidelines at ‘12A’/’12’ state that ‘the use of strong language (for example, ‘fuck’) must be infrequent’. DEATH AT A FUNERAL contains over thirty uses of strong language, meaning that the film was more appropriately placed at '15' where the Guidelines state that ‘there may be frequent use of strong language’. The work also contains a number of verbal sex references. Many of these are moderate in nature (eg references to 'condoms', 'having sex' and 'not wearing panties') and might have been acceptable at '12A'. However, some of the references are stronger (eg references to sex clubs) and are more appropriately placed at '15' where the Guidelines permit 'strong verbal references to sexual behaviour'.

The Guidelines at ‘15’ go on to state that ‘drug taking may be shown but the film as a whole must not promote or encourage misuse’. One of the running jokes in the film is the inadvertent taking of hallucinogenic drugs by several members of the extended family. One of the characters in the work has made and misplaced a batch of ‘acid’ disguised as Valium. Other characters, suffering for one reason or another from stress, come across the drug and, believing it to be Valium, take it. Although the results are comic, the film as a whole does not promote or encourage drug misuse and the scenes in question include no novel instructional information.

DEATH AT A FUNERAL also includes some crude toilet humour. In one scene a character has an accident whilst using the toilet and faeces spread everywhere. This and the mild slapstick violence in the film would have been permitted at a lower classification category.
