DAS LETZTE SCHWEIGEN - THE SILENCE is a German thriller, subtitled in English. A quiet community is shocked when 13-year-old Sinikka disappears as she cycles home from the fair. Her bicycle is found in exactly the same place that another young girl was killed 23 years ago. The police race against time to find Sinikka and the perpetrators of both crimes. The film was classified '15' for strong language and sexual violence.

Sexual violence features in the opening scene, when a man chases and pins a girl down in a cornfield. This is followed by a brief implied rape, some choking, and then a single lethal blow to the girl's head. The scene is brief and lacking in detail, with the viewer only seeing glimpses of the attack through the stalks of corn, accompanied by muffled sounds. There is no nudity and only a little blood seen on the girl's head afterwards. The BBFC's Guidelines at '15' state 'Strong sadistic or sexualised violence is [...] unlikely to be acceptable. There may be detailed verbal references to sexual violence but any portrayal of sexual violence must be discreet and have a strong contextual justification. The scene is both visually discreet and central to the narrative. There is a brief shot later showing the girl's body being pushed into a lake, and brief sight of another victim's pale dead face with her eyes closed.

There are nine uses of strong language. This exceeds the terms of the Guidelines at '12A'/'12' which state 'The use of strong language (for example, 'fuck') must be infrequent' but is permissible at '15' where 'There may be frequent use of strong language'.

Paedophilia is a theme in the film. There is a scene in which two men watch a film in which a young teenage girl sits awkwardly on a bed as a man in an animal mask strokes her hair then starts to unbutton his shirt. No further detail is shown.

The film also contains natural male nudity as a man swims naked in lake, and there are two brief scenes of a couple making love but with no nudity shown.
