THE DARKEST HOUR is a science fiction action film about an alien invasion of Moscow. The film was classified '12A' for moderate horror, violence, threat and language.
The action, which involves the central characters attempting to evade the aliens whilst making contact with other survivors of the alien attack, gives rise to scenes of threat and bursts of violence. These are not unduly sustained, however, and are permissible at '12A' where the BBFC's Guidelines state 'Moderate physical and psychological threat may be permitted, provided disturbing sequences are not frequent or sustained'. There are some moments of horror, most notably when the humans are dispatched by the aliens, who manifest themselves as balls of light that lash out with blasts of energy. These blasts result in human victims dissolving or disintegrating into clouds of dust, ash, and embers, but with no gory detail.
The film contains two uses of moderate language. The first occurs when a character who has cheated his partners in a business deal is referred to in his absence as a "Swedish prick". In a later scene, a soldier repels an alien with blasts from an automatic rifle and exclaims triumphantly, "You don't like this, bitch!". The Guidelines at '12A'/'12' state 'Moderate language is allowed'.
The film also contains some mild bad language, such as uses of 'hell', 'shit', 'dumbass', 'dick', 'goddam', 'Jesus', 'assholes' and 'douchebag', along with infrequent mild sex references.
