COSMOPOLIS

COSMOPOLIS is a film adaptation of Don DeLillo's 2003 novel. A young multibillionaire in a luxurious stretch limo embarks on an odyssey across Manhattan as he goes in search of a haircut. The film was classified '15' for strong sex and language.

The BBFC's Guidelines at '12A'/'12' state 'Sexual activity may be briefly and discreetly portrayed'. There are two sex scenes, both of which take place in the back of the stretch limo and both of which feature detail of thrusting and riding. One of the scenes includes female breast nudity during sex, followed by full frontal female nudity after sex. These scenes are insufficiently brief or discreet to be permitted at '12A' but are allowable at '15' where the BBFC's Guidelines state 'Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail'. The film also includes five uses of strong language. The Guidelines at '15' state 'There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, 'fuck')'.

COSMOPOLIS also includes two scenes of violence. In one scene, the principal character shoots himself in the back of the hand with a self-loading pistol. Blood is shown but little injury detail. The second scene shows the assassination of the head of an international organisation on live television. The victim is approached from behind whilst being interviewed and is stabbed several times in the eye with a knife. The assault, which is filmed from a distance, also features blood but no discernible injury detail.
