THIS IS CONGO is a documentary about the long-running civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Violence

There is footage of battles in which government armed forces and rebel groups exchange mortar and rocket fire. These sequences are loud and intense, giving a strong sense of the chaos of the war violence in which civilians are occasionally caught up.

Injury detail

There are images of bloody injuries sustained by combatants during fighting. There are also archive photographs from the country's colonial past in which its people were enslaved by Arab and European powers and punished for not performing tasks by having their hands cut off. The black-and-white photographs show severed hands being held up and the victims posed with post-amputation stumps on show. There are also images of the dead bodies of victims of war violence.

There are verbal references to death and violence, including sexual violence, but these do not contain graphic details.
