THE COLD LIGHT OF DAY is a US action adventure film. A young man joins his family on a sailing holiday off the coast of Spain. After a brief trip to the mainland he returns to the yacht to find it ransacked and his family kidnapped. He learns that his father is a CIA operative and that rogue agents, terrorist groups and the Israeli intelligence services are desperate to get their hands on the contents of a briefcase that was recently in his father's possession. The film was classified '12A' for moderate action violence and infrequent strong language.

The BBFC's Guidelines at '12A'/'12' state 'The use of strong language (for example, 'fuck') must be infrequent'. There are two uses of strong language, one of which is partially obscured. The Guidelines at '12A'/'12' also state 'Moderate violence is allowed but should not dwell on detail. There should be no emphasis on injuries or blood, but occasional gory moments may be permitted if justified by the context'. The film contains a number of scenes of moderate action violence, including exchanges of gunfire and punches and other blows. However, there is little emphasis on individual details, which are usually lost within the fast paced action, much of which occurs under low lighting and/or at night. When the film was originally seen for advice, one scene featuring a large blood spurt and one scene focussing on the detail of an injury were highlighted as unlikely to be acceptable at '12A'. These moments were removed or reduced before the film was submitted for formal classification. The film also includes two interrogation sequences in which men are tied up and punched. However, there is little detail and the scenes have narrative justification.

Precuts information

During post-production, the distributor sought and was given advice on how to secure the desired classification. Following this advice, certain changes were made prior to submission

Note: The following text may contain spoilers

This film was originally seen for advice. The company was advised that the film was likely to receive a '15' classification but that their preferred '12A' could be achieved by making cuts in two scenes, to reduce a focus on injury in one scene and to remove a large blood spurt in another. When the film was submitted for formal classification, these changes had been made and the film was classified '12A'.
