CLOUD ATLAS is a drama based on the best-selling novel by David Mitchell. It stars Tom Hanks, Halle Berry and Hugh Grant. Multiple storylines - set during the distant past, the present and the future - intertwine as people fight for love, justice and freedom with shared values that are passed through the generations. The film is rated 15 for one use of very strong language, strong language, strong violence and sex.
There are multiple uses of strong language ('f**k'), some of which are directed aggressively at other characters, and a single use of very strong language ('c**t'). The use of very strong language occurs when a gangster describes a critic who has reviewed his new book unfavourably. Although the term is used with some aggression, it is not aimed at a person who is present at the time.
There are several scenes of strong bloody violence. For example, during a battle between rival tribes, some people are hit with machetes, including sight of a man's throat being cut. Elsewhere in the film, characters are shot, resulting in blood spurts, and a man is thrown from a high rise flat, landing with a bloody impact on the pavement below. Although there is sight of the bloody aftermath of violence, the film does not focus on the infliction of wounds or injuries.
CLOUD ATLAS also includes a couple of strong sex scenes, including one in which a woman's bare breasts and buttocks are visible as she sits astride her partner and thrusts up and down.
The film also contains some verbal references to suicide and a man killing himself with a gun, off screen.
There are some sex references as a man is accused of sodomy.
One man, established as unpleasant, also uses the word 'nigger' to describe a man in a story set during the era of the slave trade.
No-one younger than 15 may see a 15 rated film in the cinema. No-one younger than 15 may rent or buy a 15 rated video or DVD.
