CHRONICLE is a drama about three teenagers whose lives are changed suddenly when they acquire amazing powers from a mysterious source. The film was originally classified '12A' for cinema release for moderate violence, threat, bloody moments and language, following changes made after the film was seen for advice. This 'Director's Cut' video version includes content which was removed for cinema release as well as other additional content, and it was classified '15' for bloody injury detail, strong violence and sustained threat.
When one of the characters confronts a bully at his school he injures the other student and is then seen dwelling upon the damage he has done. The scene includes some bloody focus on the nature of the injury. In the climactic sequence there is now more focus on the detail of bloody injuries sustained by a character in a sequence containing more sustained threat. Also in the climactic sequence there is more focus on an impaling as well as additional moments of violence. The BBFC's Guidelines at '12A'/'12' state 'Moderate violence is allowed but should not dwell on detail. There should be no emphasis on injuries or blood, but occasional gory moments may be permitted if justified by the context'. In this version of the film there is an emphasis on injury and a focus on gory moments and strong violence which exceeds the allowance under the '12A'/'12' Guidelines.
In the early part of the film, the teenage characters use their newly acquired powers for fun and thrills, playing tricks on unsuspecting people. However, when one of the characters begins to use his powers in a malign and dangerous way, the tone of the film becomes darker and more threatening. While this remains a prominent feature in this version, it falls within the Guidelines at '12A'/'12' which state 'Moderate physical and psychological threat may be permitted, provided disturbing sequences are not frequent or sustained'.
The film also includes moderate and mild bad language, including uses of 'bitch' and 'prick', 'God', 'Jesus Christ', 'hell', 'dammit', shit', 'son of a bitch', 'ass', 'asshole', 'douchebags', 'crap', 'screw off' and 'screwing around'. It also features some moderate sex references.
Precuts information
During post-production, the distributor sought and was given advice on how to secure the desired classification. Following this advice, certain changes were made prior to submission

This work was originally seen for advice in an unfinished form. The company was advised that the film was likely to receive a '15' certificate but that their preferred '12A' classification could be achieved by making some cuts and visual reductions. When the finished version of the film was submitted for formal classification, cuts had been made in two scenes. Cuts involved the removal of a violent act and subsequent discussion of this, with some bloody focus, reducing focus on bloody injuries, and reducing sight of a character being impaled. With these changes having been made when the film was formally submitted, it was passed at '12A'.
