BREAKING DAWN - PART 1 (2011)

BREAKING DAWN - PART 1 is the fourth film in the 'Twilight' series, which involves vampires and werewolves. In this instalment, Edward and Bella get married. The film was classified '12' for moderate violence and sex.

The BBFC's Guidelines at '12A'/'12' state 'Moderate violence is allowed but should not dwell on detail. There should be no emphasis on injuries or blood'. The strongest moments of violence occur during fight sequences between the rival groups of vampires and werewolves. There is some intensity to these scenes but very little in the way of injury detail or bloodshed. Later in the film, blood is seen during a scene of childbirth. It is implied that the baby is being delivered by Caesarean section, although no detail of the woman being cut open is shown. However, blood is seen on the woman's body and on the hands of the man who is performing the operation and trying to save her. The Guidelines at '12A'/'12' state 'Moderate physical and psychological threat may be permitted, provided disturbing sequences are not frequent or sustained'.

The film also includes a sex scene in which Edward and Bella consummate their marriage while on honeymoon. The scene is largely played off the character's faces, with no nudity and little sexual thrusting. The Guidelines at '12A'/'12' state 'Sexual activity may be briefly and discreetly portrayed'. At one point during the scene, Edward accidentally breaks the headboard of the bed as a result of his extreme strength. However, the fantastical context, the relative lack of detail, and the fact the scene marks the culmination of a relationship that has been developing over the previous three films means it is permissible at '12'.
