THE BREADWINNER is a Canadian animation drama in which a young Afghan girl disguises herself as a boy in order to provide for her family.

Threat

A child is caught amidst gunfire and bombing. Two young children are chased by a machine gun-wielding Taliban member. Prisoners are marched at gunpoint by Taliban soldiers; it is implied that they are to be executed. A man threatens a woman with a knife. Milder threat occurs in fantasy sequences in which a boy encounters fearsome creatures and dangerous storms.

Violence

Two women are beaten: we hear the sounds of the impacts but the blows occur off-screen. A man is shot, resulting in moderately bloody aftermath detail. A man punches a child in the stomach, knocking her to the ground.
