BOYHOOD is a US drama, filmed with the same cast over a period of 12 years, showing family life as the children grow into young adults.
Frequent use of strong language ('f**k' and 'motherf**ker'), as well as milder terms such as 'shit', 'asshole' and 'bitch'.
Strong verbal sex references, including to oral sex. In one scene, boys look at images in a catalogue showing women in underwear; in a later scene, older boys appear to look at internet porn, although no strong detail is visible.
In one scene, teenagers are shown sharing a joint; later they are shown eating 'hash brownies'. The drugs are never explicitly referred to, and the film as a whole does not promote drug misuse.
Domestic violence is implied when a crying woman is found lying on the floor, suggesting her husband has hit her, although the violence is not shown. The husband, an alcoholic, is shown at a family meal, drinking heavily, shouting and smashing plates. He also drives recklessly when drunk, scaring the children he has in the car with him.
One scene includes a brief clip of real life news footage, showing events in Iraq. This includes sight of vehicles on fire and some dead bodies strung up in the background. They are not shown in close-up detail.
