THE BOXTROLLS is an animated adventure about a young boy, raised by underground creatures, who tries to save his friends from extermination.
There are several references to the Boxtroll creatures 'eating babies' and 'slurping at intestines', although these are later revealed to be myths. In one scene, all the Boxtrolls are apparently flattened by a machine, with the plate rising to reveal only squished boxes; it is later revealed that the creatures have actually escaped.
There are scenes of mild threat throughout. The film opens with a scene in which a baby is taken by a creature, who runs off into the night. It is some time before the audience realises the creatures are friendly, and even longer before it is made clear that the boy was given to the creatures for safe-keeping, rather than stolen. There are several scenes in which the main baddie, Mr Snatcher, and his companions chase and capture the Boxtrolls, using nets and catapult-like contraptions. The main character is chased with a bat and threatened with being lowered into a fire pit by a giant spider-like creature.
The film also contains a couple of scenes in which the inquisitive Boxtrolls put forks into a toaster and get an electric shock, with a spark of current running through their bodies. It's made quite clear that this is a dangerous activity. There are a few scenes of belching and vomiting, with the Boxtrolls thinking this is normal behaviour, and a sequence in which the creatures appear without their boxes, with little naked bottoms on show. There is also some very mild bad language, with uses of 'God' and 'Lord'.
