BLOOD DRIVE is an arena-based driving game set in a post apocalyptic world, in which the player assumes the role of a range of characters causing death and destruction with their armed vehicles. As well as the destruction of hordes of zombies in any of the arenas, the player must deal with attacks from rival drivers in their quest to become the champion. The game was classified '15' and contains strong language and gory violence.
At '15' the BBFC's Guidelines state that 'Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable'. During BLOOD DRIVE there is frequent sight of gory violence, as hundreds of zombies are shown being run over or shot by the player's vehicle as well as those of rivals. There is also the opportunity to blast zombies to pieces with weapons such as a mini gun or spinning saw blades. On such occasions body parts are seen flying across the arena along with showers of blood. However, there is almost no opportunity to dwell on the injuries caused as the pace of the game is so frenetic. It also possesses the over the top feel of an arcade game rather than offering a realistic depiction of gory violence, with the gore taking on a cartoon quality and a commentator speaking throughout the events. A couple of the game's closing 'cut scenes' feature some gory moments, such as when a character's ending sequence shows a zombie being shot in the head, with the undead victim hitting the ground with a thud, blood pooling underneath its head. Again this is presented in a stylized, cartoon fashion. This treatment of violence throughout the game means that the strongest gory images are not present, and there is seldom any dwelling on the infliction of pain or injury.
At '15' the Guidelines state that 'There may be frequent use of strong language'. BLOOD DRIVE features occasional uses of strong language during typical gameplay.
The game also features some moderate sex references, such as on fictional billboards which extol the virtues of places such as the 'Tail End Hotel - the fun is always in the back'; and 'Happy Endings - Ladies, Laddies, And everything in between!' These are images that are not readily apparent while playing the main game, but rather seen as artwork in the added material.
